The Duke alumni interview: how it works and how to prepare
Duke's alumni interviews are optional and held virtually or by phone with a Duke alum. Early Decision interviews run from late October to early November, and Regular Decision ones from early December to late February. Your interviewer sees only your name and contact details, not your application.
Duke offers interviews where extra context would help, and says applicants who aren't interviewed are not affected. Below is how it works, the questions it's built around, a worked example and how to prepare.
How does the Duke interview work?
| Question | What Duke says |
|---|---|
| Is it required | No, it's optional |
| Who interviews you | A Duke alum |
| Format | Virtually or by phone |
| Early Decision | Late October to early November |
| Regular Decision | Early December to late February |
| What the interviewer knows | Your name and contact information. They don't see your application |
| Who gets one | Duke prioritizes applicants for whom more context would help |
| If you aren't interviewed | It doesn't affect your application |
Duke also notes that alumni interviewers can't predict or influence your chances. They're there to learn about you and to help you decide whether Duke is the right fit. If you aren't interviewed, Duke's page lists other optional ways to add a personal view of yourself; check it for the current options.
What questions are asked in a Duke interview?
Duke's interview page doesn't list questions. Because the conversation is also meant to help you explore whether Duke fits, expect questions about you and plenty of room for yours:
| Theme | How it's often asked | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| You | "Tell me about yourself." | What you lead with |
| Interests | "What would you study, and what got you into it?" | Real intellectual curiosity |
| Why Duke | "What draws you to Duke?" | Specific knowledge of Duke |
| Community | "What would you get involved in on campus?" | What you'd add |
| Challenge | "Tell me about something difficult you've dealt with." | Resilience and reflection |
| Your questions | "What would you like to ask me?" | Whether you're weighing the fit too |
A worked example: "What draws you to Duke?"
- Why it's asked: your interviewer wants to hear what you'd actually use at Duke.
- What a strong answer does: names one or two specific things (a program, a research opportunity, a community or tradition) and connects each to your own story.
- Weak answer: "Great academics and amazing basketball."
- A likely follow-up: "How would you get involved in your first semester?"
Teaser of a strong opening (swap in your own): "Mainly [the chance to do research early]. I [ran a small survey on sleep and grades at my school], and I'd love to learn to do that properly with [a faculty mentor]."
How to prepare for a Duke interview
- Request the interview. Duke's page explains how to ask for one when you apply. Do it early.
- Set up for a video or phone call. Quiet room, good light, a charged phone. On a phone call, your voice carries everything, so practice speaking clearly.
- Know your "Why Duke". One academic thing and one outside class, each tied to you.
- Practice out loud. About a minute per answer, then stop and let them ask more.
- Prepare questions. Duke frames the interview as a way to explore fit. See questions to ask your alumni interviewer.
